Jackson, Wyoming has an elevation gain of 6,237, with a population of 10,639 (according to the 2023 census poll). The town actually got it’s name from David Edward Jackson, an American trapper, fur trader, and explorer. Jackson is known for its outdoor recreation, wildlife, and Wild West culture. It is a great place to visit, especially in the winter months.
Jackson Hole valley hosts three ski areas. These include Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain Resort, and Grand Targhee Resort. The Town Square features arches made of shed antlers from the nearby National Elk Refuge. Does this sound like a place you would like to visit yet?

Let’s get into the best way to spend the winter days in this western snow-globe town.

Like I mentioned earlier, Jackson Hole valley is surrounded with great hills to ski on. Jackson is also famous for its world-class skiing and snowboarding. The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort boasts steep slopes and is known for its challenging terrain. If you’re looking for something not as crowded and closer to town, Snow King Mountain offers great runs with incredible views of the town and surrounding areas. If you are beginner, I would recommend taking the scenic 1.5 hour drive to Grand Targhee Resort, which is located on the other side of the valley in Alta, Wyoming.

2. Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing
Not much of a downhill skier? That’s okay! For a more tranquil experience, try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in Grand Teton National Park. There are also so many nice groomed trails in the area. The Teton Pines Nordic Center is a favorite for cross-country enthusiasts, offering a wide variety of trails with beautiful scenery.

You can rent gear from many businesses in town, but I recommend getting your rentals from Teton Backcountry Rentals. Grab a friend, pack a snack, and get going!

Winter is a prime time for wildlife viewing, especially in Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge. You might see elk, bison, moose, wolves, and even bighorn sheep.
